Internship Diary: Right Where I Belong

Growing up in Indianapolis, it was hard to imagine a life where I could make creative connections and do what I was passionate about. I have always been a creative person. I love any form of self-expression, from writing to music to art.

My first time hearing about PATTERN was my freshman year of college. I was completely blown away by this magazine and how its vision aligned perfectly with my own values. When I saw that PATTERN Magazine was looking for interns, I knew this was where I belonged. Although, as a freshman taking 12 credit hours and working 30+ hours a week, I had no time to commit to an internship. I always kept my eyes glued to the PATTERN social media accounts, knowing that one day I’d be a part of the community.

Finally, two years later, I decided to apply. It was the first time in my life that I had absolutely no doubts. I’m no psychic, but I knew that PATTERN was for me! This was the space I’d dreamt about for so many years and I am beyond grateful to be a part of it.

PATTERN has taught me so much, not only about myself but about my city. As a writing intern, I was given the opportunity to feature some amazing and super talented local creatives. I made connections with other journalists and freelance writers. I learned more about the impact that art has on our city. I learned the importance of being confident in what you do but also being open to growth. The freedom that was placed in our hands as interns was frightening in the beginning, but it allowed me to strengthen my storytelling.

Although I had no doubts about making it into the PATTERN office, I definitely had doubts about how good my work was compared to others. Self-doubt is one of my biggest struggles, as many can relate. However, working alongside the other interns and fellows, I didn’t see anyone as a threat. I wasn’t focused on comparing my writing to others. I admired the fact that I was in a room with people who are just as hungry as me, and that’s what fueled me throughout this whole experience. We all worked hard and played even harder.

This internship brought me so much joy! From the fellows to all the other interns, the energy was nothing but remarkable. Being a part of this creative publication gave me the reassurance I needed. I have a deep love for magazines, and after interning at one, I can rightfully say that this is the environment that I want to be in. I love being surrounded by different people with different talents. Working with photographers, graphic designers, stylists, and social media managers kept my creative brain busy. I’m not sure what the future holds for me, but I hope to continue working for magazines and other digital media publications.

I used to see Indianapolis as boring and imperceptive. I never felt like I belonged here because I didn’t think the city offered a space for like-minded individuals. PATTERN has changed that narrative for me. Indianapolis carries so much overlooked talent, but I am blessed to have shared the stories of local artists, content creators, business owners, and much more.

Thank you PATTERN for allowing me to showcase my writing abilities on your platform. Thank you for trusting my ideas and pushing me to think beyond what I believed was possible. Thank you to all of the fellow interns for celebrating every published article and interview. Thank you to all my friends that supported me every step of the way and reminded me of my talent.

I have a substantial amount of gratitude to anyone who read a story, reposted it, or just sent kind words. As much as PATTERN has become my home, I know my season as an intern is over, and it feels so good to leave the office with new skill sets, new lifelong friends, and new opportunities!
