What’s something you’ve been obsessed with lately?
Peach Snapple tea. I feel like I go through phases where I obsess over one snack. Right now, I’ve been drinking like a whole gallon of Snapple peach tea in the span of two days. So that’s all I drink right now and it’s really yummy.

How would you describe your personal style or what influences your style?
I think my personal style is something I’m working on right now. I’m trying to be more creative in my outfits. Sometimes it kind of overwhelms me because I feel like I put a lot of pressure on myself to have a good outfit so I just kind of always settle for something really boring. But I’ve been taking inspiration off the coast. I don’t know, a coastal grandmother mixed with Cowboy Western. I really like how people are incorporating cowboy boots into their outfits.

What’s one place you’re always spotted at?
Chipotle. I live right by Chipotle. I go there probably like two, three times a week. I just go there a lot and I have a lot of rewards stacked up–it’s kind of embarrassing.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I really like to cook. A lot of my videos on my for you page and my Instagram explore page are different recipes so I like to save those and test them out. I make a pretty good chocolate chip cookie, not gonna lie. I’m pretty proud of that. I like trying new recipes mostly. I like to keep them easy but every once in a while, I like to give myself a little bit of a challenge.

What made you interested in working in social media?
I’ve kind of always been the kid who was setting up their phone and recording themselves growing up.  I’ve always been very immersed into pop culture. When I was deciding what I wanted to do towards the end of high school before I was going into college, that kind of seemed like something that [I’d be interested in]. Social media is always evolving and I really liked that.  I think it’d be really interesting to have a job in social media because not every day will be the same; I think that’s something that I thrive in and would set me up for a really good career.  I just like how social media is always changing and every day is different.

Who is your biggest fashion icon?
I would probably say Kanye because I know we don’t necessarily dress the same but I like how he takes very simple pieces of clothes and makes them really unique, like his gap hoodie–it just fits way better than every other hoodie I have seen.

If you were on death row, what would your last meal be?
I’d want a big bowl of pasta and then a plate of raw hamburger meat, because I’ve always wanted to try it and it looks so delectable every time I make hamburgers; I want to eat it so bad, but I don’t want to die. So if I’m already going to die, then I want a raw hamburger. Because it’s so red and juicy.

What drew you to PATTERN?
My friend Micah was an intern over the summer. She got a lot of cool opportunities from it and said it was so fun. I love art and I love having fun so it sounded like a perfect opportunity.

If you could pick one song to describe your life what would it be?
Sorry, I’m talking about Kanye again, but probably “Through the Wire” by him. Not necessarily because it directly reflects my life; I have never been in a car accident but the whole song is about him in a car accident and realizing he only has like a certain amount of time to live, and follow his dreams. I think it’s an inspirational song and I feel we both have a mentality where if you want something, you go and get it. And so I would say that’s where me and Kanye collide.

What is your guilty pleasure?
I really like walking outside without shoes and socks, on the pavement. I like eating breakfast on the porch, no shoes, no socks. I like feeling the different textures on my feet, it’s…exciting.

Which decade do you think has the best style and why?
I’d say the 60s because I like the dresses. I think they’re sweet. I also like how clean it was, but it was also fun and bright. I really like 60s futurism where they predicted what would happen in the future–it was just so way off and sweet. So the 60s!

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
I feel like I’m a pretty open book. I feel a lot of people know a lot of things about me. Not a lot of people know in my personal life that aside from fashion design, I would really like to try acting, singing and modeling but I’m just not confident in those aspects. Those are skills that if you told someone you wanted to do them, they’d either judge you or want proof instantly you can do those things. A lot of people don’t think that’s a serious thing I want to pursue, but that is definitely something I’d like to try.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Somewhere in life that I can just be happy with. A lot of things in my life are changing and it’s making my vision a little clearer. I don’t necessarily mind being in Indiana as long as I’m doing what I love and I’m still traveling, because I travel pretty frequently. Career wise, I’d like to have my master’s. I want to learn more about investing. My dream would be to be a celebrity designer and stylist before I’m 30.

What do you hope to get out of this internship?
Experience working in a professional setting, collaborating, doing professional photo shoots,  and styling. I’ve never actually styled for anyone other than myself. I also want to make friends and network; I want names and numbers. I’d like to think that by the end of this all of us interns can become close friends.

What advice would you give your younger self?
“I wish you never stopped believing in yourself, because you used to for a long time–and now I have to pick up where you left off. We could have been so much further in our skill set. We could have been such a better artist if we hadn’t dropped out of that art class.” I would have been so much further and I regret that a lot. So advice: don’t stop.

What first got you into styling? How did you know this is what you wanted to do?
Styling is the gateway, but I knew I wanted to do fashion design when I was 5. My sisters and I had similar princess coloring books, and my sisters would color the girls and horses and everything. But I would only ever color the clothes and draw designs on the clothes and on the fabric–that was the only part I cared about. I just wanted them to look pretty. I would get lots of coloring books and only color in their clothes then I would show my family. My dad was really supportive and he would get me little sketchbooks all of the time. My dad got me a croquis and a mannequin. My mom gave me her sewing machine, and they kept fueling that passion when I was really young. So I’ve known since I was 5 that this is what I wanted to do.

Who is your favorite fictional character?
I would probably say anything post pandemic or apocalyptic. I definitely like Zendaya’s avatar character in Dune. Whether it’s an enchanted movie or a movie like Divergent or The Lord of the Rings, those characters are always the most strong and capable. They rise to the occasion within their world.

What activity instantly calms you?
Photography, because it forces you to concentrate on a subject. It kind of excludes everything you know that is going around. It steadies your mind through the process too. It’s very therapeutic, especially if you have anxiety and you need to focus.

If you could take a week off from your regular life and go “off the grid” where would you visit?
I would go somewhere like New Zealand. I’m very in touch with nature. I love just being surrounded by nature and being able to exclude yourself somewhere you can be alone and have peace, especially right now–there are so many things happening. Political, economical, it’s just so much.

Where do you find clothing inspiration?
I do a lot of trend forecasting first. I always look at different brands. I love very casual, classic, elegant looks. Yves Saint Laurent, Michael Kors, even Fendi. I love Chanel too, it’s just a Paris classic. Clean, minimalistic styles are my favorite.

What is something you have accomplished as an adult that your younger self would be proud of?
I would say studying in Italy–even being able to apply for it. I would have never thought when I was younger, “Oh, in the future I’m going to be learning about fashion and Italy while being able to live there.” And, you know, that was such a big change. Going away, moving from your home, you know. Learning a new language, not understanding anything. I would never have imagined it, but I’m glad I did. That’s something I will never ever regret.

What is your favorite song right now?
My favorite song right now is .stitches. by Frank Iero because I saw a live performance video and I was like this song is so good. I had to check it out.

What is your secret talent?
I don’t know if it’s a talent, but I can read people’s lips. So in case somebody’s like yelling at me from far away I can read their lips.

What hobby or skill do you hope to pick up one day?
I actually really want to learn how to longboard, but I am really terribly balanced. So I don’t know how that’s gonna go. But that’s one of my goals.

What is your favorite movie?
The Ratatouille movie. Since it came out when I was little, I was obsessed. I was like, I’m gonna go to France. I’m gonna be a chef. I was really dedicated. I was like, anyone can cook. That’s me. I can cook.

Who inspires you?
I don’t have a particular person. But I like looking at people. Like creatives, seeing people doing what they love as their job kind of makes me feel like oh, you know, I don’t have to work a boring nine to five job I can actually do what I want. It just takes a little bit, or maybe a lot, of hard work to get there. So seeing those people living their best lives makes me want to go out and live my best life.

What are some of your inspirations that you use that come from your daily life?
For my day to day, either it’s classic, refined and sophisticated, or it’s chaotic and there’s a big personality. So, just looking at my own closet, some days I’ll go straight full one color, other days I will turn to some crazy pattern mashup.

Do you do anything specific to get your creative juices flowing?
I do a lot of researching on Pinterest, but some can come from social media like Instagram- check out @watchingnewyork. Looking at different street style photos on the Internet and discovering different ways to interpret street style as casual or high fashion is really inspiring, especially through everyday people.

If you had a one time offer to work with a brand, and only one brand who would you work with?
Alexander McQueen, he was always very inspirational in terms of testing the boundaries of theatrical fashion. His aesthetic was not simple, he took risks and could get crazy with the silhouettes of his clothing.

What is styling to you?
Styling is capturing the essence of a person and having the ability to create a character using surrealism, as an example. Just by embracing the fun and passion of putting outfits together, you also have the ability to capture the glamour of everyday life.

When you think of “Emily the stylist” what is your dream job?
The first thing that comes to mind is working for a celebrity like Lady Gaga. I would love to work with an artist throughout their career, like Nicola Formichetti did with Gaga. But not only styling red carpets and music videos, also getting to help someone with their look for the Met Gala. I would also love to style a Pacers player, like Bennedict Mathurin.

Where do you see yourself going in the long run?
I would love to have the chance to work with FKA Twigs or Julia Fox especially because Julia pushes the barrier in terms of solely being an actor. Not only being able to style her but to learn about how she used to style herself- learning her creative process would be amazing.

What is your favorite gift that you’ve given to someone else?
When my grandma died, her and my mom were really close. I took a voicemail that my grandma left me that said, “I love you,” and made a necklace with the sound wave of her voice saying that and gave it to my mom as a present. I followed it up the next year with a painting of my mom and her parents on her wedding day. I love giving gifts. It’s like my love language.

What Met Gala theme would you love to create, and which already existing one would you have wanted to walk the carpet for?
Angels and Devils. The Heavenly Bodies would be my favorite [to walk for].

What celebrity inspires you creatively?
I don’t know. I feel like a lot of artists inspire me. Maybe Harry Styles. His style is so unique to him. It pushes forward fashion and a direction that I think it needs to go. And I think with editorials and styling it goes hand in hand and that inspires you to push your own art in that direction.

Who’s your favorite cartoon and what qualities do you think you both share?
I would say Kim Possible because I love her fashion. I like the casual, but then she also gets dressed up and some of [the episodes] with short miniskirts. I think that she inspires people to push past their boundaries and explore new horizons. She’s really exploring herself as a woman and she can save the world; that’s a message to young women to keep pushing and you can save the world one day too.

What do you do to lessen waste and work toward sustainability?
I would say, I don’t shop much because I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older, certain medicines cause weight gain. And the mindset of shopping, going into a store, really scares me now. I feel like I’m not going to find anything in my style or size or anything like that. So I’m more sustainable and I like re-wearing the items over and over again. It’s so repetitive but at the same time, I’m not consuming more in my life. It’s just minimizing what I already have.
