Graphic by Icah Watkins

May is approaching and there are countless delights that make Indiana springs and summers the best. Each year when the heat and greenery returns it feels almost unbelievable. Maybe the best part of this return is the fresh produce. Tomatoes, zucchini, corn, and fresh herbs immediately come to mind. While winter farmers markets do exist in Indiana, there’s no denying that summer markets have the glow.

Realistically it isn’t always possible, but shopping at farmers markets is one of the best ways to help Indiana’s local food system. Indiana farmers markets are overflowing with fresh produce, garden starts, fresh herbs, locally and organically made household products like soaps and cleaners, beverages, and sauces and spices. Shopping for these items at farmers markets flows money to people who want better for this city and state, and you might even meet them! The real people growing the food you’ll eat!
