BUTTER is Back! Here’s What to Expect at BUTTER 2: A Fine Art Fair

GANGGANG is hosting BUTTER 2 this Labor Day Weekend, and trust us—get tickets. This multi-day fine art fair will feature the works of over fifty Black visual artists from all over the U.S., including Julian Jamaal Jones, Will Watson, Kiah Celeste, April Bey, and more. The best part? It’s right in downtown Indianapolis at the Stutz Building. This art fair is unlike any other, as guests are able to immerse themselves in art through a new, more equitable experience that uplifts Black artists into the local and national spotlight.

Tickets are on sale now and are valid the entire weekend. Here’s the schedule:

Thursday, Sept. 1:
Preview Night, 4 P.M. to 7 P.M.

Friday, Sept. 2:
Opening Day and Night, 11 A.M. to 10 P.M.

Saturday, Sept. 3:
11 A.M. to 10 P.M., plus MELT 9 P.M. to midnight

Sunday, Sept. 4:
11 A.M. to 6 P.M., plus Testimony Service at 2 P.M.

In addition to an extensive selection of artists, the second-annual BUTTER Fine Art Fair will include over ten live performances. Listen to Dorian Phelps‘ jaw-dropping drum skills, dance your heart out to sounds from Deckademics and DJ Grapevine at MELT (an un-missable multi-sensory dance party), or enjoy a performance from 81355.

BUTTER was created with interactivity in mind, so there will be plenty of ways to engage with the fair all weekend long. Mali Jeffers, the co-founder of GANGGANG, emphasized the intentionality that went into organizing the event.

“When people come into BUTTER, I want them to feel like they were thought of,” Jeffers said. “I want the artists and the audience to know that we thought of you, we thought of every element from when you get out of your car in the parking lot to when you leave this event. We’ve been very intentional about the experience and about how we can elevate the context around fine art made by Black people.”

This year, BUTTER will be bigger than ever! Three new event spaces serve to expand the Fine Art Fair, including the length of 10th Street from Senate to Capitol Avenue. As a result, local creatives including Styled by Fei, Manifest State of Mind, and Branded by God have curated interactive outdoor installations meant to encourage connection. Artwork on display at the event will be available for purchase, allowing the fair to benefit artists through an equitable and reparational process (GANGGANG takes no commissions from artists’ sales and charges them no fees to participate).

Other ways to participate include browsing through BUTTER-themed merchandise, joining artist workshops and taking historic walking tours of the area with Sampson Levingston on certain days. Attendees can round out the weekend with a concluding testimony service led by Ebony Chappel and Sarah Jené.

For a sneak peek at BUTTER 2, you can purchase VIP tickets for $175, which grants access to Thursday’s Preview Night. General Admission tickets cost $35 and are good through the weekend.
