Tangerine Tango: Pantone’s Color of 2012

Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced PANTONE® 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, a vivacious, enticing hue, as the color of the year for 2012. – Dec. 8th Press Release

There was no festive bubbly drinks, no TV specials, and no Ryan Seacrest announcing the official announcement. Every year the industry standard in the color industry, Pantone, selects a color of the year. 2012’s Tangerine Tango will surely continue the popularity of the orange tones from previous seasons, stirring up a bold and festive energy for the Spring season. Tangerine Tango is going to show up in multiple aspects of men’s and women’s apparel. Although men may see the color as just orange, this deep-orange has tones of red and yellow layered in it to create a sexy bright color. I see most people loving Tangerine Tango in the “pop of color” for styling. The December press release announced a collaboration with Sephora to launch a Pantone make-up collection. It is launching the collection with the Tangerine Tango. I am thinking it will be a perfect shade of lip color for those lush swimwear photo shoots. Men will find the color popular when it come to the spring gear accessories. I hope the designers of watches, sunglasses, and belts will take advantage of this color for warm-weather accessories.

Pantone also does some color trend forecasting for fashion seasons as well. They have selected a color palette for men’s fashion for Spring 2012. Personally, of course, I am bummed by the lack of grey and black. Maybe this will be the year that I take my own advice and embrace color.

If you have seen any of the Spring 2012 men’s collections, these colors are well represented for ready-to-wear. The Spring color palette is perfect for embracing the color-blocking trend that will continue to be at the forefront of men’s fashion this year. Never fear, I will post all about color-blocking when spring is closer. Band of Outsiders showed a collection for Spring that highlighted how to color block using many of the colors from Pantone’s spring palette. If you really like the blue tones from the palette, check out the Buckler collection for their use of blues for spring. The Dsquared collection shows some good examples of how to use some of the brighter colors in accessories.

I know there is barely snow on the ground and Spring is already being discussed, but for those fashion-conscious shoppers, the color palette is a great heads up to review the mess of a closet you have. It is also good to purchase items, now, that will be great complements to the spring color line-up. This will make sure that your closet is perfectly set for transitioning between seasons. While doing your holiday shopping you could also think ahead for the gentleman in your life and pick up some accessories from the spring palette. I know that I would love a fresh daytime watch in any of the spring Pantone colors. I hope Santa is paying attention!

If you are like me and feel very comfortable in your neutral color palette of grays and blacks, it is easy to start with a bold color scarf or watch. If you notice, Pantone added a hue of gray into the mix to make some of the other colors pop. I am sure that after the nasty gray winter is over, stylists will want to play with men’s clothes in Pantone’s 2012 Spring color mix.

What do you think, stylist and designers? Are we in for a bold color aesthetic for men this spring? Is there a color you disagree with or think is missing?
