Meet Our Summer 2018 Interns

Let’s welcome our Summer 2018 interns! This new group of interns is super excited to dive into new projects and experiences with PATTERN. Keep an eye out this summer for new content!

Keller Masnyk

School: Indiana University
Major: Journalism
Minor: German
Hometown: Noblesville, Indiana

What’s on your Summer Playlist?
“I’m from Noblesville, so country by default. But I also listen to whatever new hip-hop is out and lots of electronic music.”

Where can we find you shopping?
“Mostly my brother’s closet, but I also shop the deals. Stores that blend outdoor activities with fashion. Rusted Moon and other small independent shops like that are some of my favorites.”

What are some things that inspire you?
“The outdoors. I’m also passionate about this city and putting Indy on the map a little bit more.”

Future Plans?
“Wherever the wind takes me at this point. I just really want to travel. My dream job growing up was working with National Geographic. Journalism is a good way to bridge that gap because it keeps me out of an office.”

Christina Ni

School: Indiana University
Major: Management
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN

What do you want to do with your major?
I knew I wanted to be my own boss. I’m self-motivated. I would love to be a creative director in the fashion industry. If not, I want to be in the non-profit part of management. I knew I was put in this world to be a leader.

How did you hear about PATTERN?
A good friend of mine. He’s actually a photographer for PATTERN. Watching him grow as a creator inspired me to want to go down that path. I love PATTERN’s vision, and how willing they are to grow this industry in Indianapolis. It is very powerful!

What is your fashion inspiration?
I’m very into clean but bold looks. Chic and edgy always, I love that. I guess my inspiration comes from ‘strong woman.’ It changes with my vibe and mood.

How do you build your social media presence?
My friends, my boyfriend and occasionally a photographer take my photos. It’s a long process. I’ll get 50 photos and pick one or two. I am notorious for deleting pictures. I use an app called UNUM to organize my photos to preview the display. I like playing with the Instagram edits, adjusting the brightness or contrast.

Samantha Ripperger

School: Indiana State University
Major: Textiles, Apparel, and Merchandising
Hometown: Franklin, Indiana

What drew you to your major?
That’s So Raven inspired me at a young age to go into fashion design but Project Runway drew me away from it! Now I’m more into the social media and the editorial facet of the fashion industry.

Who inspires you in the social media and merchandising field?
Social media wise, I would say Elaine Welteroth. I watch her Instagram stories religiously and she’s a very good journalist and covers topics like activism and fashion.

Now that you’ve graduated, what’s your plan?
I’m going to stay in Indiana for a while and then eventually I would love to work for Teen Vogue so I would have to move to New York at some point. I’m comfortable with Indiana but also not comfortable with it. I’m used to living in a small town so big cities do scare me sometimes.

What do you like most about Indiana?
I like being able to see my family. I like that Indianapolis always has something going on, especially something new. I like seeing how Indianapolis has grown over the last few years.

What do you like to do on your free time?
I love watching movies whether it be Netflix, renting DVD’s or going to the movie theatre. I enjoy spending time with my family and my cute dog. She’s a miniature dachshund.

Claire Bowles

School: Huntington University
Major: Graphic Design
Hometown: Noblesville, IN

What’s your favorite thing about Indianapolis?
The people, first and foremost. Indy feels like a big city but stays true to its small communities. There are a lot of passionate people here and I’m excited to be one of them!

Where’s your favorite nightlife spot in Indy?
I have adventured most in Fountain Square. There are so many murals and several opportunities to listen to live music, especially during First Friday events.

How do you describe your personal style?
It depends on the day! Some days I wear all black and other days I wear a floral dress. It’s kind of all over the place to be honest.

What’s your dream job?
Doing graphic design work for a fashion magazine and living in a city. I’m stoked to help with growing the art and fashion culture here in Indy, but would also love to travel.

Taylor Kelly

School: Ball State University
Major: Telecommunications/Journalism
Minor: Fashion
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN

What do you want to do with your major?
At first, I wanted to become a fashion journalist. While I still have those aspirations, I now want to obtain a master’s degree in public relations. I am now more interested in becoming a communications/public relations director for fashion brand/company.

What do you want to gain from this internship?
I joined PATTERN to get in touch with my creative side. I want to test the water and find where I belong in the fashion industry as well as gain real-life, hands-on experience in the world of fashion.

How would you describe your style?
I love to stay with the trends. Some days I like to dress in neutral colors and other days I like a pop of color. It depends on my vibe. I would describe my overall look as edgy & chic.

Arland Mcilrath

Name: Arland Mcilrath
School: IUPUI
Major: Finance
Hometown: Kokomo, IN

Being a finance major, how did you get into fashion?
Growing up I definitely chose comfortability over fashion. Over time I found that a lot of my friends enjoyed fashion and actively tried to better their own. Their passion for self expression rubbed off on me.

What is your dream job?
I want to help organizations build from an idea into something that’s successful and tangible as part of a venture capital firm.

What is your favorite college experience?
I like having been exposed to different cultural experiences here in Indy. Although it’s getting better, there is limited diversity in Kokomo. Indy’s definitely put me face to face with many different points of view that I would have not encountered otherwise. It’s pushed me out of my comfort zone for the better.

What’s your dream place to live?
Spain! I visited in high school and want to go back. Here we get really stuck in working 9-5s, wanting a white picket fence, instead of savoring the years we have. Spain enjoys a much more relaxed lifestyle.

What do you want to take away from PATTERN?
I want to get comfortable with pushing my comfort zone and experience something that’s not in my normal routine.

Lori Bowes

School: Purdue University
Major: Professional Writing
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN

What is your favorite artist or music genre?
I would say I listen to all types of genres and music, except for country. Some of my favorite artists are Daniel Caesar and Tame Impala. I really enjoy music that you can play in a chill setting, that you can really connect with. I also really love oldies music, and could listen to that for days on end, like the Temptations or Etta James.

What is your favorite movie or movie genre?
My most recent favorite movie is Call Me By Your Name. I really like Wes Anderson movies and the cinematography and colors that he incorporates as a director. I enjoy anything that looks visually beautiful while also bringing in a story that is interesting and compelling.

What is your favorite thing to create?
I would say my favorite thing to create is short stories. I love writing fiction as well as reading fiction in general. I also really love drawing and painting, and getting creative through multiple different outlets.

Ty Stratton

School: Ball State University
Major: Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising
Hometown: Brownsburg, IN

What is your favorite artist or music genre?
My favorite artist of all time is Kanye West. I would say rap is my favorite genre, but I like every genre, except for country. Throughout my entire life, it seems like Kanye West has grown with my personality. If I had to pick an artist that I like right now, I would say Tame Impala. They hit me at a very interesting point in my life.

What is your favorite thing to create?
I have my own apparel brand, called Appearel that I started in 2015. I love designing for my brand and my favorite thing to design right now would be t-shirts. I love minimal style, and making people think with design. Another thing I’m trying to do this summer is to create a movie script. I have a couple of scripts that I’m working on, and I dabble in them when I can.

What is your favorite movie or movie genre?
My favorite director is Quentin Tarantino. I love Django Unchained. John Wick and Ex Machina. I really like thrillers. For some reason I really like violent movies, not sure what that says about my personality though.
