Rebecca Minkoff may well be the signature designer of millenials everywhere. Seventeen magazine, and subsequently all their readers, are in love with her. Yet, she also appeals to young women well on up into their mid-thirties. She’s stylish, colorful, and playful without being inappropriate. With her spring/summer 2014 collection, Ms. Minkoff may find that she’s expanding her audience as well, for many of the looks have qualities I know will be appreciated by older women as well.

Rebecca says her inspiration for this collection comes from strong Latin women mixed with an American sportswear influence. We can see the Latin influence in a number of places, but most vividly in the choice of bright, boldly colored floral patterns and an amazing amount of embroidery, especially around collars and the tops of  blouses and jackets. Cropped jackets hinting at the bolo style and modified ponchos also add to that south-of-the-border flair.

The line is perfect for teens twenty-somethings, to be sure. Light, gauzy and sheer tops over lace shorts flatter a youthful figure with a playful attitude. Short skirts and sundresses are summer staples to be worn over and over again. The level of appeal to Ms. Minkoff’s target audience is dead on.

However, just because one’s age has inched past the 30 mark doesn’t mean one has to look elsewhere. The embroidery work on the sweaters and jackets give the pieces a more mature aesthetic. The orange and blue on white floral print used on four different pieces flows well and is flattering to a more curvy frame. The last two maxi dresses in the set might actually swallow the teen, but would look wonderful on someone more mature.

Hmm, could this mean a mother/daughter shopping trip? Ms. Minkoff may be on to something there.

I can’t end this review without talking briefly about the incredible shoes in this collection. Laser cutouts on calf-high lace ups in both solids and patterns really turned heads on the catwalk. I won’t dare comment on how comfortable they might be, given the heel height, but the models certainly looked good and walked well in them.

Rebecca Minkoff’s spring/summer line is very cool, very sporty, and very pretty. You can find Rebecca Minkoff in higher end department stores as well as online at rebeccaminkoff.com.
