Yoshiko Kamikusa is currently a professional ballet dancer as well as a founding member for Indianapolis Ballet. From the age of 12, Yoshiko has dedicated a great amount of time and effort to pursue professional ballet by moving to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to receive training and pursue her dreams. At the age of 17, she received her first professional job offer from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in Canada After spending five years with the dance company, she is now continuing to pursue her passion for dance in Indianapolis. In addition to being an amazing dancer, Yoshiko has a unique sense of personal style. She talked about some of her style inspirations below!

What is your earliest memory of a noticeable interest in fashion?
I suppose it was when I was about six. I specifically picked out a dress and asked my parents to buy it. My mom usually chose my clothes when I was little (honestly she still does), and I wasn’t really one to oppose or question any of it. So to have chosen something on my own account was a first, and that probably was the start of my interest in fashion.

Who or what influences your style?
My mom! She definitely has a much better sense of fashion than I do, especially since she used to work in the fashion business. She often sees potential in things that I normally wouldn’t see at first glance, but the results work in my favor and really highlight my individuality. I look my best when I follow her advice – she’s basically my personal stylist!

Describe your personal style in four words or one phrase.
Colorful. Unique. Comfortable. Loud.

Who are your favorite designers, and what do you like about their designs?
A very high-end designer that I love would be Jeremy Scott. I just adore his fun, one-of-a-kind and stylish clothing and accessories. For dresses and cocktail attire, my go-to is Max Azria. I find that his line of clothing has that unique, sophisticated flair I like.

What trends are you noticing for spring fashion?
I feel like vibrant colors and patterns are trending – which I love because that’s me anyways!

Define fashion.
A means to express the way you feel best and true to yourself.

What’s your go-to item in your closet?
I have always loved my Juicy Couture tracksuits because they are extremely good quality and flattering in design. I can wear them in just about any everyday event, such as going to work, running errands, and going to the gym. Recently, I have developed a slight obsession with leather and jean jackets. I think they’re useful when you want to turn your casual look into a casual-chic look, and you only need that one item of clothing to complete the switch. I’m also definitely a sneaker person. This is mostly because my profession prefers me to wear comfortable shoes, and I like being able to move around with ease. That being said, I love a good pair of heels, and I’m especially fond of ankle-length boots.

Did you ever consider leaving the Indy area? If so, what made you stay?
Considering that I just moved here, I don’t think I’ll be leaving anytime soon! I feel like Indianapolis is one of those cities that has a lot to offer; most people just don’t know about it. I’m excited to explore more of the city’s hidden gems!

What’s next for you? What short and long term goals are on your list?
Short term goals: Get better at time management and do things more productively. To not procrastinate and do things ahead of time. Long term goals: To constantly improve myself as an artist, performer, dancer and human being. I want to reach out to as many people as possible with my dancing, and be the dancer that people want to see time and time again. I believe that what I do brings joy, inspiration and beauty to others, and for as long as I stay in this profession, I hope to deliver on my part with this purpose in mind.
