Jason Michael Thomas’ Guide to Indy Eats

In a world of Big Macs and Whoppers, Chef Jason Michael Thomas is a breath of fresh air. He champions backyard gardens, open fire cooking, and local farmers. Instead of settling for another mediocre, carcinogen-laden burger, check out Urban Awareness Gardens! Immerse yourself in the food experience by trying Jason’s Private Chef Experience, culinary classes, or even a private party hosted at the farm! I promise it’s better than a drive thru.

Who better to trust your taste buds than Jason Michael Thomas? He has taken time out of his busy schedule to give us some local recommendations! I, for one, can’t wait to try Goose the Market. (And educate myself more on sustainable eating!) Learn more about Jason’s sustainable initiative here — and keep an eye out! Jason’s goal is to become an international spokesperson for the sustainable food movement. With a regular spot on TV and vibrant social media presence, I’d say he’s well on his way! Be sure to follow Jason on Instagram.

Without further ado, here are Jason’s 5 go-to Indy eateries!

Shoefly Public House (122 East 22nd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202)

“Just a few blocks from my home in Herron-Morton is a place with a choice wine and beer selection as well and lots of tasty food items on the menu. One of my favorite local dishes and perhaps the best value in town is the duck wings that now feature Gunthorp Farms duck. I really like their arugula salad paired with this dish.”

Cannon Ball Brewing Company (1702 Bellefontaine, Indianapolis, IN 46202)

“Chef Erin Kem at Cannon Ball has a menu that changes regularly showcasing her creative spirit. Delicious food and beer selection. Chef Erin features Tulip Tree cheeses on her charcuterie boards and her cabbage rolls feature Dewig beef and pork along with Fermenti kraut.”

Gallery Pastry Shop (1101 E 54Th St., Suite G, Indianapolis, IN 46220)

“In addition to a dazzling display of pastries and cakes, The Gallery is a fantastic brunch spot that features all kinds of local deliciousness. It’s hard to go wrong with their sandwiches, omelettes, and crepes that feature local meats and cheeses. I highly recommend a side of Becker Farms bacon with any brunch offering!”

Goose the Market (2503 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis, IN 46205)

“When Goose the Market opened years ago I did a happy dance. So close to home and stocked with high quality ingredients that can be difficult to track down under one roof: beer, wine, fresh bread and meats and cheeses, including one of my favorite Indiana companies (Jacobs & Brichford Farmstead Cheese). Their Piccante Meatballs are super delicious and feature locally raised meats.”

Hedge Row American Bistro (350 Massachusetts Ave Suite 150, Indianapolis, IN 46204)

“Relatively new on the scene is Hedge Row. I’m super impressed with the quantity of items on their menu that feature Indiana ingredients. Fischer Farms beef, Gunthorp Farms chicken and pork, and I highly recommend the Viking Lamb Meatballs.”
