A Guy’s Style Guide for Adding Color to your Spring Look

For Spring style inspirations, I am loving two collections for men: Gant by Michael Bastian (who I am rarely disappointed with) and Dsquared2. Both collections are sure to elevate your fashion game. The collections are great examples of how to layer, use color, and funk up a preppy look. This spring, guys are going to see a focus on great spring suits. I want to give you an everyday style guide to mix up your wardrobe.

Gant by Michael Bastian

Every season Gant by Michael Bastian produces some great looks for guys. Spring 2012 highlights the best in using color and layers. Guys, don’t be afraid of the color. It’s an easy process. Start with your pants or shorts – these days, many of stores are carrying colorful options. This season, Gant’s panst & shorts utilize a combination of gray denim, white trousers, and shades of blue.

Next, choose a neutral top. A denim shirt, linen button-down, or a lightweight knit are all popular options. The neutral colored shirt will help accent the colored pant or short. I always love a v-neck t-shirt, so that’s also an easy option. Gant paired a streetwear pant with a double breasted cotton jacket to make a cool street-ready suit. The pants are accented with leather belts, Navy uniform-inspired belts, and – my favorite – a white rope. With menswear this spring, you have to focus on the details because that’s all we have. Make sure to roll the bottoms of your pants to show the ankle and a stylish pair of shoes.

The last part of the process is to choose a top layering piece: a coordinating polo or a light, spring jacket. When all else fails, go for a denim jacket in white or blue. Gant by Michael Bastian used a jacket that I’m in love with: a cherry red camo jacket. Enough said. Guys, when it comes to your spring look, don’t try hard. It is supposed to be relaxed and fun.

If you’re a guy who is a little more chilled and laid back, maybe you’ll relate better to Dsquared2’s Spring 2012 collection. The collection is a little simpler and tailored than the Gant’s. It still highlights the use of color in pants, jackets, and accessories, and most of the looks are also paired with a basic piece.

Dsquared2 did a great job of pointing out that men’s style is in the details. For example, a white shirt was paired with gray dress shorts and accented with a sun-bleached sweatshirt. The details come in the sunglasses, sandals, and necklace. I’ve spotted some great stores that stock good men’s accessories: Aldo, H&M, and Urban Outfitters.

Another thing that Dsquared2 did was swapped out the black leather jacket for a camel colored one. Having an alternate color in your favorite piece is a great way to be comfortable and still look good this spring. Again the thing to remember is color in the pants. From bold island inspired colors to sun bleached hues of strong color, you have to ditch the black and go with color. If you’re feeling fancy, add the Dsquared2 camo. You can’t go wrong with camo this spring and summer for streetwear. Just watch the fit of the jacket (or pants if you decided on a camo pant) to make sure you don’t look like an oversized character from a 90’s Snoop Dogg video.

Guys, even I have embraced adding color to my wardrobe. A giant leap from my normal color combination. On a sunny day, with clear skies, sitting on a patio with a margarita in hand, I have to say: this is the perfect way to show off my new streetwear color palate. So, gentleman, I raise my glass to you who choose to wear a colored pant. Just remember: there might be some guys who raise their eyebrow at your fashion choice, but I guarantee you will get the added attention for your style. Cheers!
