Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Creative Entrepreneurs

Take your creative business to the next level

SPACE Residencies offer a unique opportunity for creative entrepreneurs by providing a workspace or storefront in a strategic location, as well as mentorship and support from industry professionals. Pattern currently offers residencies in two studios at the Stutz.

We get it, you’re an out-of-the-box thinker who busts through traditional roadblocks with creative solutions. We can relate! How do you think Pattern got to where we are now?

For the SPACE Residency, we took a page from business incubators and tech accelerators, and we’ve applied it to creative businesses. Mentorship from industry professionals, business development strategy, a cohort of like-minded entrepreneurs, targeted funds, and dedicated time to grow your business. Plus, a cheerleader for your wild ideas to get your brand in front of the right buyers or throw an event your audience will be talking about for years.

Resident Project Highlight: Julian Jamaal Jones

During his time as a SPACE Resident, Julian Jamaal Jones launched an accessory collection to expand his work and revenue streams with the online shop JULIAN. Utilizing his abstract painting style printed onto fabric, Jones created limited lines that captured his unique style. Jones leveraged Pattern’s photo studio to complete a look book and update his website, resulting in two sold out accessory lines.

Workshops + Events

2024 Resident Madeline MacKinnon, of Frida’s Flowers, planned unique, interactive events to allow customers to engage with florals in a new way, by becoming part of the creative process behind the bouquet. These included pop ups, workshops, and a private dinner with J’adore, where attendees helped create the tablescape.

FAQs

Are you accepting applications for the SPACE studio residencies?

The short answer? Yes!

Residencies typically last six months, so we are always looking for future residents.

What are you looking for in a resident?

We’re looking for folks who are serious about taking their creative business to the next level. For us, that looks like presenting a business plan with KPIs on how you intend to scale your work, brand, and income during your residency.

What is included in the SPACE Residency?

The SPACE Residency at the Stutz is a grant-funded program that offers wrap-around services for residents, including free studio space, a stipend, and business coaching.

I’m interested in applying, but not sure my business is the right fit. Should I apply?

We recommend that you at least be in the “side-hustle” stage, but we find that candidates who are in the “start-up” phase or beyond tend to get more out of their residency experience.

If you’re not sure exactly where your business is at, that’s totally okay! We invite you to apply all the same.  We love having conversations with folks about what they might need to prepare for future opportunities.

Hear from Past Residents

Madeline MacKinnon - Frida's Flowers

“My time as a SPACE resident has truly allowed me to dream bigger than how I was dreaming prior. Having the SPACE program in my corner and as a resource has been incredibly rewarding and has enabled me to cast vision for what business looks like.”

2024 Resident

Julian Jamaal Jones

“Being accepted in the program has allowed me to meet key art gate keepers here in Indianapolis. The most exciting parts of the program were the studio visits, and having the opportunity to get my work in front of curators and gallerists here in Indianapolis.”

2024 Resident

Priya Wittman

“I’m looking forward to giving my art and the idea of an art business full credibility. A part of why it’s taken me years to understand that this is what I want to do is because it’s hard for me to believe that I can do it. Now, I’m starting to see how I can. I’m looking forward to the confidence I’m already developing. I’m growing.”

2024-2025 Resident

Chris Banta - Romanus Records

On early challenges in growing his business, Romanus Records: “Keeping up with demand, growth, and the need for more space. My family and I built a studio onto my home a couple of years ago that I work out of, but I’ve outgrown it pretty quickly. The Stutz space was a huge blessing.”

2023 Resident

Boxx the Artist

“As an artist and a business owner, I’ve learned how to prioritize my time to feed my creativity and strategically create. This residency program offers much-needed studio space, but it also includes opportunities, visibility, and mentorship to propel participants to the next level of their professional careers. Being in the Stutz…I’m surrounded and motivated by other creators. The Stutz is a collaborative community, a creative incubator which catalyzes growth.”
