Fall 2012 Trend Report: Knits for Night

Picture an elegant night out on the town.  What are you wearing? Maybe a slinky satin skirt, some strappy stilettos, a triple strand of pearls, topped with… a chunky cable knit sweater? Might sound odd, but that’s exactly what designers think evening wear should look like this upcoming fall.

F/W 2012 looks from left to right: Michael Kors, Salvatore Ferragamo, Derek Lam, Tommy Hilfiger

For the most extreme in contrast, Derek Lam topped his flowing maxiskirts with sleeveless snow-white cable knits, while Michael Kors paired a black tie-worthy glimmering gold skirt with a chunky fisherman knit normally reserved for cozy nights by the fireplace.

At Bottega Veneta, designer Tomas Maier threw slim waffle-weave sweaters over peplums and pencil skirts for an elegant take on the trend, and a classic pullover sweater dressed up with cotton candy fur and an embroidered mini was polished youthful perfection at Oscar de la Renta.

The best part of this trend? Most of us probably have a chic evening skirt and a cable knit sweater lying around just waiting to be thrown together, no shopping required. Now that’s what I call recycling.
